Eligible residents urged to get vaccinated for winter

17/9/21

Bolton residents are being urged to get protected in preparation for winter with both the Covid booster and flu jab, if eligible.

Following the announcement that a third Covid-19 vaccination will be available to certain groups, plans are in place to invite people for their third vaccination. This will be a minimum of six months after their second.

As flu season is also approaching, it is recommended that that those eligible for both vaccines get them at the same time.

Those eligible for the third Covid vaccination are: people living in care homes for older adults; all adults aged 50 years or over; frontline health and social care workers; all those aged 16 to 49 years with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk of severe Covid-19, and adult carers; adult household contacts of immunosuppressed individuals.

In line with JCVI advice people will receive a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine unless advised otherwise for medical reasons.

People will be contacted in priority order like with their first dose, starting with those aged 80 and over and care home residents. Vaccinations will take place by appointment only at hospital hubs, GP practices and pharmacy-led sites, either by invitation from their GP or via the National Booking System.

Dr Helen Wall, senior responsible officer for the vaccination programme in Bolton, said: “We are making the appropriate plans to administer the third Covid jab and people will be invited to book an appointment very soon.

“We have also received updated JCVI guidance to say that a third jab can be given at the same time as a flu vaccination. I would urge everyone who is eligible for both to have them together as soon as they are offered, in order to have the best protection going into winter. We have a challenging few months ahead of us and we need to protect our NHS and the most vulnerable. A third dose and flu jab will help them to maintain the best protection during the winter months and reduce their chances of ending up in hospital.

“My offer still stands that it is never too late have your first Covid vaccination, so anyone aged 16 or over is welcome to attend one of the walk-in vaccination clinics. Sadly, the majority of deaths and cases of people seriously unwell in hospital are people who are unvaccinated.”

Plans are also being developed to carry out vaccinations of 12-15 year olds in schools very soon, as per the Government’s decision earlier this week.
