Extra opportunities for teenage vaccinations

13/8/21

Bolton’s walk-in clinics are providing extra opportunities for teenagers to get their vaccination, with more locations now able to welcome 16 and 17 year olds.

In line with guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), anyone aged 16 or over can now get vaccinated if they are directly contacted by their GP or by attending certain walk-in clinics.

There are currently four locations in Bolton offering this service and more will be available very soon.

It’s also easier for those who are three months away from their 18th birthday (17 years and 9 months) to get vaccinated as they can now pre-book an appointment online via the National Booking Service (NBS) in addition to attending any of our walk-in clinics.

Dr Helen Wall, senior responsible officer for the vaccination programme in Bolton, said: “In order to welcome 16 and 17 year olds safely, our sites must review their operating processes and this can take some time. However, I’m pleased to say that more sites are now ready, including the pop-up site at Eden Boys’ School this weekend.

“With exam and vocational course results announced this week and thousands of teenagers heading out to study, work or celebrate their achievements, it is a prime time for them to spread the virus without knowing it. Therefore, it’s a prime time for them to get vaccinated!

“Also, anyone who is double-jabbed no longer needs to self-isolate from Monday if they are identified as a close contact of a positive case, so please don’t delay in getting your vaccination.”

For anyone over the age of 18, the JCVI guidance is to have an eight-week gap between doses. The guidance currently advises that a single dose is sufficient for 16 and 17 year olds, but this could change in the future.

The vaccine has also been made available to some young people aged 12 to 15, but only if they meet strict criteria as set out by the JCVI. This cohort will be contacted directly by the NHS if they are deemed clinically vulnerable to Covid-19 or if they live with adults who are at increased risk of serious illness from the virus.
