Pharmacy to lead Breightmet vaccination site
A pharmacy is to operate the Covid-19 vaccination site at Breightmet Health Centre.
Cohens Chemist will start to run the site, which was previously operated by Breightmet and Little Lever Primary Care Network (PCN), on July 19.
It will be the borough’s second pharmacy-operated site: Hootons Pharmacy, part of the Whittle Pharmacies group, began vaccinating people at the home of Bolton Wanderers Football Club in January.
Cohens Chemist has a branch in Breightmet Health Centre, Fold Lane, and there will be no change to the location of the vaccination site there.
There are no outstanding appointments and people will now book appointments for the site – which will be called Breightmet Health Centre (Cohens Chemist) - on the National Booking Service, rather than through their GP practice.
The Covid-19 vaccination programme is being led nationally by NHS England and Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is managing arrangements on a local level.
Dr Helen Wall, Senior Responsible Officer for the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme in Bolton, and Clinical Director of Commissioning at Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The vaccination site at Breightmet Health Centre has been very successful and there has been a high uptake of people in the area coming forward for their first and second doses of this life-saving vaccine.
“I want to thank the GP practices which make up Breightmet and Little Lever Primary Care Network for their work since the site opened in January.
“I am delighted that Cohens has taken the opportunity to come on board the vaccination programme in Bolton.
“We are trying to make it as easy as possible for people in Bolton to get their Covid jab at a time and a venue that suits them. As a pharmacy-led site, people from across the borough will now be able to book an appointment to get vaccinated at Breightmet Health Centre, not just those living locally.
“Cohens will work closely with the local GP practices. We will also be looking at supplementing vaccinations at the site with local walk-in clinics and visits from our hugely popular vaccination bus, offering people even more choice.
“The success of the borough’s vaccination programme has been fantastic; more than 190,000 people living in Bolton have had their first dose but we still have thousands of people to vaccinate.
“It’s also important for people get their second dose to ensure maximum protection against becoming seriously unwell or needing hospital treatment.”
Cohens Chemist is part of Cohens Group, a family-run business which was established in 1980. It is one of Britain's leading pharmacy chains with branches throughout the UK.
A spokesman for the group said: “We are delighted to be starting Covid vaccinations at Breightmet Health Centre in order to support the vaccination effort in the fight against the pandemic, and to help the community get back to normal.
“Appointments will be available on various weekdays, throughout the day and in the evenings. We will also be offering appointments on Saturdays and Sundays so people don’t need to worry that they can’t access a convenient appointment time.
“We look forward to welcoming people for their vaccinations in the week commencing July 19.”
